76ers Apologize To Sevyn Streeter For Not Letting Her Sing National Anthem Due To 'We Matter' Shirt

Days after Sevyn Streeter was denied the opportunity to sing the National Anthem by the Philadelphia 76ers because she wore a "We Matter" shirt, the sports team is offering the R&B singer an apology and the chance to return for redemption.

In a statement, the Sixers have addressed the controversy, admitting that they were wrong to nix her performance right before the season-opener between them and the Oklahoma City Thunder. "We are sorry that this happened. After receiving feedback from our players, basketball operations staff and ownership group, we believe the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcomed to sing,” the team said in the statement, which was released on Friday (October 28).

"We apologize to her, and in an effort to move the conversation forward, we have reached out to offer her an opportunity to return and perform at a game of her choice. We are waiting to hear back."

Prior to the statement, the Sixters issued a shorter (but vague) statement about the cancellation, which prompted a last-minute fill-in from a team dancer at the time. Streeter initially blasted the move via Instagram, exposing the 76ers for their decision.
