Last week the San Francisco 49ers voted to award QB Colin Kaepernick with their "most prestigious honor," the Len Eshmont Award. According the ESPN, the award is given to a player "who best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont, an original member of the 1946 49ers team." Kaepernick was the face of controversy in the NFL when he refused to stand for the national anthem prior to games. His refusal sparked a movement among some players who joined in his protest against the treatment of minorities and police brutality.
Not everybody thinks that Kaepernick deserves the award, including former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann. During an appearence on Fox New's Outnumbered Theismann, wondered what Kaepernick inspired in his teammates on the 2-14 49ers. Kaepernick was benched due to poor play, but earned his starting spot back in the middle of the season. The team did not fare better with him under center going 1-11.
He also called for the NFL to enact a policy that forces players to stand for the national anthem before games.
