Takuma Sato is chugging the celebratory milk after outlasting Helio Castroneves down the stretch to win the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sato took the lead with five laps to go from Castroneves. Sato is the first Japanese-born driver to win the Indy 500. Castroneves finished in second place for the third time and fell just short of his fourth Indy 500 victory, which would've tied him for first all-time. Pole-sitter Scott Dixon's car went airborne after making contact with Jay Howard's car on lap 55. Both men were able to walk off the track, but the race was over for them. Ed Jones, Max Chilton, and Tony Kanaan rounded out the top five finishers.
Defending champion Alexander Rossi finished seventh. Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso led 27 laps during his first Indy 500, but his day ended when his engine died on lap 179.
