Federer Survives Five-Set Scare From American Tiafoe

5-time champion Roger Federer is through to the 2nd round of the U.S. Open.  The 36-year-old Swiss star survived a 5-set scare from 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe, winning the deciding fifth set, 6-4. Men's top seed Rafael Nadal was a straight-set winner over Serbian Dusan Lajovic.  On the women's side, top-seeded Karolina Pliskova cruised past Magda Linette of Poland in straight sets.  

Defending women's champion Angelique Kerber was upset in straight sets by Japan's Naomi Osaka.
