Not only is J.J. Watt one of the most talented players in the NFL, he's apparently got one of the biggest hearts as well.
The disaster left behind by Tropical Storm Harvey has been utterly devastating for the people of Texas, and the road ahead for cities like Houston and the surrounding area will be extremely difficult. Record-setting floods have left thousands homeless and killed at least 30 so far.
But the American spirit always prevails. On the ground in Texas and all over the country, ordinary folks have been doing their best to help, and it's showing.
Watt, who plays for the Houston Texans, for example, started a modest fundraising effort over the weekend using his Twitter account. The amount of money he has received has been nothing short of astonishing.
“It's very difficult. It's very difficult not only because we have family and friends back there, some guys have young kids, some guys have wives and families, but that's our city. It's very tough to watch your city get hit by such a bad storm and not be there to help. Not be there to help with the recovery, not be there to help with the process. It's very tough.”
Within two hours, his initial fundraising goal of $200,000 was raised. In fact, the fans were so eager to help, they broke the website YouCaring because of the heavy traffic.
Then, the $500,000 goal was broke in 24 hours. So Watt raised the number to $1 million.
