9th-seeded American Venus Williams is safely through to the 3rd round of the U.S. Open. The 37-year-old outlasted 20-year-old counterpart Oceane Dodin of France in straight sets in Wednesday's 2nd-round match, winning 7-5, 6-4. Williams is a 2-time U.S. Open champ, winning back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001. Meanwhile, 5th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was upset by Russian Ekaterina Makarova in 3 sets, while fellow Russian Maria Sharapova rallied from a set down to beat Timea Babos of Hungary in 3. On the men's side, 10th-seeded American John Isner dispatched of Korea's Hyeon Chung in straight sets.
17th-seeded American Sam Querrey did the same to Dudi Sela of Israel.
