World Series Win Might Not Have Saved Girardi's Job

Even winning the World Series might not have saved Joe Girardi's job with the New York Yankees.  Team owner Hal Steinbrenner said at the GM meetings in Orlando that the decision to fire Girardi as manager was something that had been building over 2 or 3 years, not 2 or 3 weeks.  Steinbrenner added that it was not a decision they took lightly, but after observing and hearing things over time, they felt it was right to move in a different direction.  He said communication and connectivity issues with players were significant enough that they may have made the change even if the Yankees had won the Fall Classic.

Girardi won 910 games, made 6 playoff appearances and won 1 World Series title in his 10 seasons as Yankees skipper.
