Immigrant Acquitted Of Murder In Kate Steinle Case Sentenced On Gun Charge

The illegal immigrant acquitted of murder in the death of Kate Steinle at San Francisco's Pier 14 is facing prison time for gun possession. On Friday (January 5th) a judge sentenced Jose Ines Garcia Zarate to prison time for illegal gun possession, but he will get credit for time served. The judge also denied a request by Zarate's attorneys for a new trial.

The Mexican man is now being taken into federal custody and he  will be arraigned in federal court in the coming days for being a convicted felon and an illegal immigrant in possession of a firearm. He could face two additional years in federal prison for the probation violation.

His acquittal has sparked a national immigration debate since he was deported five times before Steinle was fatally shot in 2015.
