The New York City Fire Department says the Trump Tower fire that injured a firefighter and an engineer was likely caused by an electrical problem. The fire broke out on the roof of the building around 7 am local time. Secret Service agents noticed the smoke and quickly notified the building's fire safety director who located the source of the fire and called the fire department. By 8 am, the flames were put out.
Eric Trump tweeted that an electrical fire in a cooling tower was being eyed as the cause and thanked first responders:
There was a small electrical fire in a cooling tower on the roof of Trump Tower. The New York Fire Department was here within minutes and did an incredible job. The men and women of the #FDNY are true heroes and deserve our most sincere thanks and praise!
According to Pix 11, one firefighter was injured by falling debris, and the engineer suffered from smoke inhalation after trying to extinguish the flames.
Tenants in the building were advised to stay in place and were never evacuated. Donald Trump does have a penthouse in the building, but he and his family were in Washington D.C.
