Funeral For NYC Activist Erica Garner Draws Hundreds

A funeral  for New York City activist Erica Garner is drawing hundreds of mourners. The service at First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem  to honor the 27-year-old mother of 2 drew so many people Monday night that not everyone was able to get inside. There were some tense moments when some of the people in the overflow crowd got rowdy and broke out in at least 1 fight. The family then issued an appeal for everyone to 'calm down.' Erica Garner died on December 30th, a week after suffering a heart attack.

She became a leading figure in the Black Lives Matter movement after her father, Eric Garner, died in 2014 from injuries he suffered during a street confrontation with police over the illegal sale of cigarettes.
