The president's legal team is reportedly in preliminary discussions to allow Special Counsel Robert Mueller to potentially interview President Donald Trump as part of a probe looking into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election NBC News reported on Monday.
According to three sources, lawyers for Trump have met with representatives of the special counsel's office to discuss the possible location and length of any interview the president would have with Mueller. Legal standards and options for the format - which could include written responses instead of a formal sitdown - were also discussed.
Mueller has been investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. president election and connections with the Trump campaign. Seventeen U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered to try and help Trump win. Russia has denied meddling in the election and Trump has repeatedly said there was no collusion between his campaign and Russia.
Another possibility floated, was the president submitting an affidavit signed by the president disavowing any wrongdoing and denying any collusion with Russia. According to NBC News, it was unclear what the affidavit might state regarding the firing of former FBI Director, James Comey while he was leading the Russia investigation.
The president has consistently said that he is not under investigation, and that the Justice Department was falling for a "hoax" and conspiracy cooked up by deep state operatives masterminded by political opponents.
