The founder of WikiLeaks is being granted Ecuadoran citizenship but Britain turned down a request to give him diplomatic status. Julian Assange has been holed up at Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012 after being accused of sexual assault in Sweden. The charges were since dropped. Diplomatic immunity would allow Assange to exit the embassy without the possibility of being arrested. The former computer-hacker fears an eventual U.S. extradition and possible trial.
Assange is believed to be responsible for publishing thousands of classified military documents on WikiLeaks in 2010.
