Pope Francis says that mutual fear between immigrants and their new communities shouldn't keep them from being welcomed. In a special mass at the Vatican Sunday marking the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, the Pontiff said such fears are understandable. Francis said that the established order is often afraid immigrants will steal something that's been built up, while immigrants are often fearful of judgment, failure and discrimination. He went on to say doubts and fears are not a sin but allowing those fears to feed hostility and rejection is.
The Argentina-born Francis this week heads off on a trip to South America.
